Pakistan cricket coach Geoff Lawson’s outburst after Pakistan humiliating loss to Sri Lanka prompted a near walkout by the assembled press corps. After insulting Pakistani journalists by telling them to improve their English, tournament sponsors and TV channel Star Cricket decided to show support to the humiliated journalists by rejigging their commentary team with as many poor-English speakers as they could manage. Consequently, Roshan Mahanama, Akhtar Ali Khan, Salim Malik and Waqar Younis are occupying centre-stage in a battle of poor pronunciation.

Tennis superstars Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have been dropped from the Indian Olympics squad as there is no way to accommodate them. The Sports Ministry announced that there is only a certain number of athletes who get to participate in the Olympics from India each time and given the strict regulations concerning eligibility, Paes and Bhupathi would be unable to take part this time round. The ministry said that after catering to the strict reservations norms given to them by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Paes and Bhupathi do not fit into any category and thus would not compete. The tennis players in the squad are two hitherto unknown players, Ramganesh Dasmunshi and Ramgopal Khandelwalkar.

Iran has officially boycotted the any entry of Olympics Barbie, the official toy of the summer Olympics game. Coming on the back of Iran’s criticism of all Barbie dolls, while this threat does not seem a major problem for most people, manufacturers are concerned of the effect that this ban would have on other Islamic countries. The official Olympics Barbie would be modelled on the traditional size zero model but would be suited in Chinese gymnast outfits. Iran has objected to lifting the ban even if there is a release of an Iranian version of the doll.

If the Olympics Torch protestors seem to have quietened down of late, it might have more to do with Chinese business than meets the eye. While protestors around the world have tried to hamper the Olympics Torch relay over China’s alleged Human Rights record, it is the sudden increase in the price of Free Tibet flags that has suddenly ended the worldwide protests. Every Free Tibet and the Reporters Without Borders flags were manufactured in China and when the protestors decided to boycott Chinese goods, the only option was US-made flags, a commodity that no protestor could afford.

It’s barely a fortnight old but the IPL has turned the cricketing world upside down. From bringing the idea of playing for money into the forefront and sending the outdated idea of playing for national pride to its grave, there are few who aren’t singing praises from the greatest cricket competition since Kelly Packer. While spirits are high all round, the ones who have the most to cheer about the IPL are the players from the Indian cricket team. Not just because they were the most expensive players in the IPL but also because for the first time in their professional careers, their houses, cars and families are safe even if they lose.
