The original travel advisory said that American visitors should be wary of Bombay roads during the monsoons because the municipal corporation does not believe that potholes should be covered. They have now issued a fresh advisory saying that these tourists should not worry because local citizens were more at risk that American visitors. The reason given was that since 90% of Americans were obese, they would at worst be stuck in the pothole as opposed to Bombay citizens who would fall in, break their legs and drown to death.
“It’s an issue of clarity more than anything else,” said John Steidman, spokesperson for the USAFO, “this clarification shows that we are as concerned about citizens of other countries as we are of our own.” Steidman said that this new release had nothing to do with the local municipal corporation sending a letter demanding an apology for the inaccuracy of the earlier report. “Our aim is not to create a sense of fear among the tourists,” he said, “what we want to do is inform them of realities that they would not necessarily see in guide books.” This clarification was released based on US Health Department findings hat show the average American waistline to be roughly 8% larger than the average Bombay pothole.
The local municipal corporation claim a moral victory based on this clarification. A press release issued hours after the new American warning said that they were “grateful that even the world’s biggest superpower can acknowledge a mistake.” Because of this release, tourists visiting India will be measured at the immigration counter on arrival. Those tourists who stand a chance of blocking a pothole would be provided with literature on the dangers of potholes and blocking potholes with their waist. “What people should realise that if we have Americans blocking potholes, the drainage system would be severely affected.
