UNSC Seat for India to Boost “What Not To Do” Factor
January 23rd, 2008 Popularity: 12% [?]Global security analysts are unanimous in their opinion, “Give India a seat in the United Nations Security Council.” Their reason, the kind of experience India would bring it terms of what never should be done would be immense. Give the fact that the last time any of the current members fought a real war was over half a century ago, India would not only be the only nation that has actually engaged in war since then but they would also be the only nation to have botched things up each time. Experts agree India is the only country that could bring new experience to the UNSC.
Paul Johannssen, Political Science professor at the University of Michigan believes no country since the Second World War better deserves a place. “The countries on the Security Council are from a long gone era,” he said, “the UNSC has to reflect the changing faces of nations.” Johannssen believes that the biggest reason to vote India is to safeguard the financial secrets of every person on the planet. “They already have our phone, bank and medical records, there’s more than a billion of them running around and they have the nuclear bomb. There’s no better reason to make sure they aren’t annoyed?” Despite these riches, India is the only country who isn’t able to do anything about national security. “Just imagine if you have a country that is able to say, ‘Hang on, don’t do that, we’ve tried it and it failed miserably.’ That in my opinion is far more valuable than a world without George W. Bush.”
Focus lies on the countries responsible for India holding this opportunity, namely China and Pakistan. “The sad thing is that if they did something in retaliation, they would only strengthen India’s position further. If they do nothing then India would have achieved peace making it an even more important member of the UNSC.” Just how much of this advice Raj Bhavan and the UN actually listen to remains to be seen.
