The government of Netherlands has announced an immediate emergency rescue operation for the damaged Indian town of Malana. The North Indian town was destroyed by fire over the weekend and with Indian government officials dragging their feet, the European nation felt that immediate action was the only solution. The Dutch town of Amsterdam imports several thousand dollars worth of Malana agricultural products every year and Dutch authorities are said to be “very concerned” at the possible damage of trade relations because of this accident. The country has pledged a 50-personnel rescue and rehabilitation team along with nearly 2.5 million Euros in emergency aid and rations.

“The Indian import of Manali Cream accounts for over 100,000 Euros in tourism revenue every year and so we have a very high interest when the sole producing region in the world faces an accident.” said Dutch Foreign Minister Liken Van Smokken. He criticised the Indian government for taking so much time to organise a rescue mission. When last heard, the government in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh ordered a two-man enquiry to visit the site and file a report upon inspection of which, the government would consider sanctioning emergency aid. This two-member inquiry panel in expected to visit Malana in the next two weeks. “Two weeks would be disastrous for all crops produced in this time period,” he said, “our Dutch team will reach tomorrow morning and will plan to conduct a complete rehabilitation plan by the end of the week.”

In addition to the Dutch effort, it is believed that Israeli and European backpackers who are currently scattered across the country are believed to be mobilising to help with the relief efforts. Backpacker favoured cities like Goa and Kerala are believed to be moving en masse to the Northern city to help protect one of India’s most revered symbols around the world. The way it seems then that by the time the Indian authorities wake up to the crisis, the foreign hand would have re-establishment the city and the production of Manali Cream.
