Indians Shocked at Conservative Tag
December 24th, 2007 Popularity: 18% [?]A recent poll has showed that more than 90% of Indians are surprised that the world regards them as “conservative.” According to the survey, most Indians think themselves to be broad and open minded, forward thinking and even progressive and they are amazed that anyone would consider them anything but that. The survey also highlighted the fact that the remaining people, roughly 7%, knew that Indians are conservative and were not surprised by the fact that the remaining people were surprised. The survey, funded by the United Nations Development Programme aimed at highlighting the reasons for this find and interviewed close to 1,300,000 people from six metros.
The questions in the survey asked people various questions under what the world would regard Indians as in different situations. Questions ranged from whether freedom of speech and artistic expression was required to be counted as progressive to whether others would perceive refusing to decriminalise homosexuality as being backward. Other questions touched about speaking your mind, abusing public figures and strictly adhering to prehistoric social customs. The answers showed a massive skew towards people thinking that there is nothing wrong with suppressing the arts, limiting and obstructing creativity, arresting homosexuals and allowing mob justice. “I don’t understand where these perceptions come from,” said one respondent, “why should we need to accept others in order to be counted as progressive when we have the largest population.”
Several social analysts have debunked these findings saying that there is no merit to any of the questions. They have claimed that the findings were presented to show India in a bad light and the government should ban any further studies along these lines. They have also called for a peaceful agitation to highlight their protest. As of now, the results of this survey will not be published in any mainstream publication and the analysts are planning to destroy cyber cafes if the results are posted online.
