The Hamid Karzai government sponsored work abroad programme in Afghanistan has become an international success. The programme is simple: no qualifications needed whatsoever, the applicant can pick their place of work and the remuneration is an entry to heaven welcomed by seventy virgins. Just over a year old, this programme has attracted over 500 students from the distant reaches of this war-torn country and continues to attract hundreds of applicants every week.

“This is just what our country needs in order to show the world that we have shed the ugly baggage of the Taliban regime completely,” said Prime Minister Hamid Karzai who praised the tireless efforts of the thousands of volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make this programme a global success, “these men and women are the future of the country and Afghanistan owes them a huge debt. Experts have credited the success of this programme to the rule of simplicity. “What this programme does is target the inherent strengths of the Afghan people,” said Rashid Malten, economic advisor to the Karzai government, “and with market forces taking care of the rest, it should not come as a surprise that the programme did so well.”

In the last month, the programme has managed to place students in countries like India, China, Bali, Singapore and Thailand. Even former enemies and continued skeptics, the USA and the UK have welcome around 15 students through this programme. Given the nature of the programme, there is no one available to comment on the experiences gained through participation in this programme but every applicant is immensely excited. “My brother went for this programme around this time last year,” said Rahim, an 18-yr old applicant from Kabul. His brother managed a placement in London starting the first week of July last year. “I hope even I can get to go to London also.”

With daily news reports damning the country for its lack of progress and insufficient attention to humans rights and female infanticide, this programme then is a beacon of hope in an otherwise arid future.
