After weeks of controversy, Prince Harry has finally been assigned a field posting with the British army. The Sandhurst graduate was scheduled first to be posted in Iraq, a decision that was revoked citing national security conerns. His subsequent posting to Afghanistan was also revoked citing similar reasons. The prince’s new posting was selected keeping in mind national security factors as well as the need of the hour. Prince Harry will therefor lead a peacekeeping mission in Ibiza starting early next week, a posting that could extend for over a year and a half.

“It would have been a tremendous waste to neglect a talent such as Harry,” said UK Defence Secretary John Reid, “at the same time, it would be foolish to consider him just another soldier.” Reid believes that with the global media almost “obsessing” about Iraq and Afghanistan, other sensitive areas around the world tend to be ignored. “Just because you do not hear about Ibiza 20 times a day on every news channel does not mean it is any less dangerous,” Reid said. The peacekeeping force numbering 20,000 soldiers would not engage in active fighting unless provoked. “Their mission is to maintain peace not engage in war.”

A press statement from Buckingham Palace said that the prince was “thrilled at the prospect of finally serving his country and fighting alongside the brave men and women that makes the UK such a great country.” Harry is believed to be taking this posting with the same amount of sincerity as he was when he was scheduled to depart for Iraq and Afghanistan. The statement said that he did not believe that his colourful social past would in any way better his chances of assimilating with the local culture. “Fighting in a foreign country is never easy,” Harry is quoted to have said, “I know about hundreds of soldiers who are risking everything they have for the country. If I can put in even a tenth of what they have during my time in Ibiza, I would consider myself successful.”
